For most of your life, the checking was done somewhere upstream. Editors checked. Institutions checked. The sheer cost of printing checked. By the time a sentence reached you it had usually survived somebody else's doubt, so your own could stay soft. and almost none of them arrive pre-checked.
The filters are gone, and what replaced them is optimized for something other than being right. The strange part is how normal it feels to read a sentence like that and keep going.

Critical thinking never meant doubt everything. Cynicism is credulity with the polarity flipped: both are ways to never actually check. The skill is spending your doubt where the load sits, and knowing a receipt from a lab coat.
For a long time the checking happened upstream, so this could stay an elective. It isn’t any more — which is good news, because it is a skill you can actually get better at. That is what the eleven sentences were for.
